Good Works Wednesday

A newsletter celebrating ASB programs, progress and people

At Associated Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired, we work every day to help individuals build skills and gain access to the information, experiences, and resources they need to live the lives they wish to lead. We are an agency for anyone, anywhere on the vision loss continuum and offer education, training, community-based enrichment opportunities, and referrals to help them achieve their individual goals.

ASB’s Diabetes Information and Support Group

The Diabetes Information and Support Group is offered in collaboration with Jefferson College of Pharmacy and provides participants with practical information on diabetes management. Information is shared to help reduce the likelihood of increased health risks due to diabetes. Participants in the group will be better prepared to manage their diabetes through shared information on topics including nutrition and diet, exercise, the importance of careful adherence to medical regimes, stress management, adaptive equipment and physical fitness.

Specific topics will include:

  • Updates on research outcomes for ophthalmologic conditions
  • Pathophysiology of insulin dependent and non-insulin dependent diabetes
  • Definitions of terms associated with diabetic management
  • Definitions and treatment of: hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia
  • Updates on research outcomes for diabetes treatment and management
  • Updates on adapted equipment for monitoring blood glucose levels
  • Information about physical fitness
  • Stress management
  • Nutrition
  • Diabetes and podiatry
  • Diabetes and dental health
  • Diabetes medication
  • Insulin therapy/oral hypoglycemic medication
  • Alternative insulin delivery systems

If this sounds of interest to the participants you work with, consider referring them to our Diabetes Information and Support Group on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Please contact Eric DeFiore for more information.
