Age-related macular degeneration focus during month of February
Associated Services for the Blind offers support and resources for people with AMD

Macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss in adults over the age of 60, and to help individuals with prevention and coping with the disease, Prevent Blindness America has named February, Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) Low Vision Awareness Month.

Age-related Macular Degeneration is a disease that blurs the sharp, central vision you need for "straight ahead" activities such as reading, sewing, and driving. It affects the macula, the part of the eye that allows you to see fine detail.

Patricia C. Johnson, CEO and President of Associated Services for the Blind (ASB), said she has noticed an increase in the number of clients with AMD. "Unfortunately we have seen a lot more people with AMD, however they are taking the right first step by coming to our agency," Johnson said.

To serve people experiencing vision loss, Associated Services for the Blind offers a low vision information and support group, giving people the opportunity to share their experiences with others in similar situations. This group meets twice a month and is run by a rehabilitation specialist. The group has guest speakers like medical professionals other professionals in allied health services.

ASB also has a radio reading service, Radio Information Center for the Blind (RICB), which delivers newspapers to people who are unable to read it for themselves, via a special receiver. RICB, which broadcasts 24-hours a day, also has special programming.

"I encourage people with AMD to utilize available resources such as low vision aids and services available through agencies like Associated Services for the Blind." Johnson said. "Taking advantage of these things will give people back the independence they feel is lost when they are diagnosed with AMD."

Associated Services for the Blind is the largest non-profit organization in southeastern Pennsylvania serving people who are blind and visually impaired. ASB is a United Way member with roots in Philadelphia dating back to 1874.
