About ASB

History
Associated Services for the Blind & Visually Impaired (ASB) is the largest nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization in the Delaware Valley (Southeastern Pennsylvania, Southern New Jersey, and Northern Delaware) that serves persons who are blind and visually impaired. In 1983, three agencies (Radio Information Center for the Blind, the Nevil Institute for Rehabilitation Services, and Volunteer Services for the Blind) merged to form Associated Services for the Blind, an incorporated non-profit agency. With that merger, a collection of services - beginning in 1874, with the Pennsylvania Working Home for Blind Men - became an effective, stronger, unified organization, providing a broad and growing array of programming for persons who are most in need.

Our Mission
Our work is particularly important: we're in one of the nation's largest media markets and urban areas, and thus have a high concentration of clients who use services. In addition, we're across the street from Wills Eye Hospital, one of the nation's leading vision specialty healthcare facilities, and we have close ties with that institution. In fact, Philadelphia and its surrounding communities have one of the nation's highest concentrations of healthcare organizations, and our services strongly complement and enhance their programs.

Mission Statement
Associated Services for the Blind & Visually Impaired (ASB), a private, non-profit organization, promotes self-esteem, independence, and self determination in people who are blind or visually impaired. ASB accomplishes this by providing support through education, training and resources, as well as through community action and public education, serving as a voice and advocate for the rights of all people who are blind or visually impaired.
